A preservative-free lubricating drop for moderate to severe dry eye, with a multi-dose bottle rather than single-use vials.
That combination is the point. Preservative-free drops usually come in disposable vials, which get expensive fast and generate a lot of waste when you're dosing several times a day. Optase uses a valve system that keeps the bottle sterile without preservatives, so you get roughly 300 drops from one bottle and three months of use after opening.
Preservative-free matters most for frequent dosers. Benzalkonium chloride, the preservative in most standard drops, is itself irritating to the ocular surface with repeated use — which is a problem when the eyes you're treating are already compromised. This formulation is also phosphate-free, and it can be used with contact lenses in.
Best for: moderate to severe dry eye, frequent daily dosing, and contact lens wearers.
Not for: use beyond three months after opening. Do not touch the tip to the eye or any surface.
