The preservative-free part matters more than most people realize. Benzalkonium chloride, the preservative in most multi-dose bottles, is itself irritating to the ocular surface with frequent use. If you're dosing more than about four times a day, or your eyes are already sensitive, single-use vials remove that variable entirely.
TheraTears uses an electrolyte-balanced formula rather than a simple lubricant, which is the reason it's often the one recommended for people whose tears have become hyperosmolar — a common feature of evaporative dry eye.
